Holistic Beginnings

By Laura DePasquale · For Families

When you invite a doula into your birth experience, trust matters. You deserve to understand what that support includes and where the doula’s role ends. These are five boundaries I bring to my work.

1. I won’t make promises I cannot keep

I cannot promise how long labor will take, how you will feel, or which interventions you may need. I can be honest about what I know, say when I do not know, and help you bring questions to your clinical care team.

Encouragement does not have to depend on telling you that everything will unfold a certain way.

2. I won’t make medical decisions for you

I am not your medical provider. A doula’s role is non-clinical support. I can help you organize questions and understand what you want to discuss, but recommendations about diagnosis and treatment belong with qualified clinicians.

3. I won’t prescribe pain relief or pressure you to avoid it

I can offer comfort measures within my role and support you in discussing pain relief with your clinician. Choosing an epidural or another treatment does not mean you have disappointed your doula. Choosing to continue without medication is also a preference that deserves respectful support when clinically appropriate.

Your needs may change during labor. Support should respond to those changes.

4. I won’t judge your birth choices

Your birth belongs to you. A doula should not turn a personal philosophy into a test a client must pass. I want you to feel able to ask questions, express a preference, or change your mind without worrying about my approval.

5. I won’t measure your strength by a birth outcome

Strength can look like laboring, resting, asking for help, accepting treatment, or processing an experience that was different from what you hoped. The way your baby is born does not determine your worth as a parent.

Before working together, ask about communication, services, backup arrangements, and professional boundaries. Clear expectations help everyone understand the support being offered.
