Holistic Beginnings

By Laura DePasquale · For Families

A pregnant student once asked me for a breakfast idea that was quick, tasty, and easy to take along. I shared the smoothie I like to make on busy mornings. You can prepare it with a regular blender and adapt it to ingredients you enjoy.

This is a recipe idea, not a meal plan or a claim that one drink meets your pregnancy nutrition needs. Your own needs, allergies, medical history, and appetite matter.

Berry, banana, and avocado smoothie ingredients

  • 1 medium banana.
  • 1 cup unsweetened coconut beverage or another pasteurized milk or milk alternative you use.
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed.
  • Half an avocado.
  • 1 cup mixed berries.
  • 2 cups leafy greens.

My original recipe also included two tablespoons of rice protein powder. That is optional. Discuss protein powders and other supplements with your prenatal care team before using them during pregnancy; products and ingredients vary.

How to make it

  1. Wash your hands, blender, and preparation surfaces.
  2. Rinse fresh berries and greens under running water. Follow package instructions for frozen ingredients, including any directions to cook before eating.
  3. Add the liquid, banana, avocado, flaxseed, berries, and greens to the blender.
  4. Blend until smooth, adding more liquid if needed. Serve promptly.

Keep it flexible

Adjust the texture and ingredients to your preferences and dietary needs. Coconut beverage and canned coconut milk are different products, so they will change the texture and nutritional content. Milk alternatives also differ in protein and fortification.

The precise calories, protein, and vitamin percentages in my older recipe depended on specific products and portions. I have removed those figures rather than present them as accurate for every version.

A recipe is one small part of preparation

Easy food options can be useful during pregnancy and after birth. If you need individualized nutrition guidance, ask your prenatal clinician or a registered dietitian.
